How can i get surround sound from my playstation 3?

I’m planning to get surround sound for my PS3 but i don’t know much about this stuff, can anyone tell me what i need to buy and what to do? But just the things that i really need I don’t have that big of a budget. I’m from the Philippines by the way so if anyone can give instructions on where to go please do. Also, my dad set up a 5.1 surround sound in my room a few years ago, and i was wondering if i could use that instead of buying a new one and if i can, how? He said it’s impossible, the speakers are too small, each of them is about 4.5×4.5 inches, will it really not work? Oh yeah and if i do need to buy something new, how much would it cost, it’s fine to tell me in dollars, I’ll just convert it.
